Background:
Millennia ago, the galaxy was consumed in a war between the Spiral - all sentient beings which ceaselessly grow, evolve, and strive for greatness - and the Anti-Spiral - a race of sentient beings that realized that the power of the Spiral will eventually lead to the destruction of the universe. Genome was in the front ranks of this battle, a powerful Spiral Knight. In the climactic confrontation of the Spiral War, Genome engaged in direct combat with the Anti-Spiral leader... and lost. The Spiral Beings, defeated by the power of the Anti-Spiral, retreated to their myriad homeworlds, Genome's being Earth.
Having won the Spiral War, the Anti-Spiral set about ensuring that the Spiral Beings could never again rise to oppose them. They did this by placing observation devices in orbit around every planet housing a Spiral civilization. If the population of the planet ever exceeded one million, the device would activate, first attempting to destroy the spiral beings directly, then alerting the Anti-Spiral home planet, where they would deal with the threat themselves. On Earth, this device took the form of the moon itself, programmed to fall to the surface of the planet once activated.
Genome returned to the battered remains of human civilization, and saw the inevitable - mankind was already rebuilding, growing, evolving. He knew that it was only a matter of time before humans reached the population limit, and this time they wouldn't be able to avoid extinction at the hands of the Anti-Spiral. There would be no way to stop them from reaching this point through peaceful means, as the very nature of all Spiral Beings is to fight upwards and outwards, fighting against anyone who oppresses them. Seeing no alternative, Genome did the only thing he could think to do to save mankind - he conquered it.
Genome created a race of human/anime hybrids called Beastmen, which possessed great combat prowess, and - more importantly - were not Spiral Beings. Using his power as a Spiral Knight and his army of Beastmen, Genome made war against the entire human race, which was in the middle of rebuilding from the past war. He won a crushing, brutal victory, and established himself as the Spiral King, Lord Genome.
Genome's next move was to ensure that human population would never reach one million. He destroyed all civilization on the surface, driving mankind into underground villages, where they couldn't support large populations. For his plan to work, all that remained was to use his army of Beastmen piloting former Spiral weapons to crush any humans who tried to rise up. After all, whether or not they were pushed underground, humans were still Spiral Beings.
1,000 years passed with Lord Genome as the sovreign ruler of the Earth.
One day, a powerful human rose up against Genome's army, destroying his beastmen in droves, and nearly killing his Four Generals. The war ended in a one-on-one confrontation with the human, where he defeated the rebel, killing him and discarding his body in the desert. That human had a son; his name was Kamina.
Fifteen more years passed, before Kamina came to the surface, along with a human named Simon, piloting an ancient Spiral weapon. Thinking little of the rebel, he sent one of his Four Generals, Thymilph, to deal with the problem. To his surprise, Thymilph was defeated, although Kamina died in the battle, leaving only the younger human and Kamina's followers.
Thymilph having failed in his duty, Genome sent the other three Generals to deal with the growing rebellion. One by one, they fell, until Simon and his army was knocking at the doors of Genome's capital city, Teppelin. Genome reponded by revealing Teppelin's true form - a massive Spiral weapon the size of an entire city.
The battle between Teppelin and the Gurren Brigade raged for hours. Simon broke through Teppelin, penetrating to Genome's throne room, and defeating his most loyal and powerful servants. What followed was a repetition of the battle fifteen years ago - Simon in the Gurren-Lagann and Genome in his personal mech, the Razengan. One by one, Simon and Genome's weapons were destroyed, until Simon in his Lagann was defeated by Genome, who was fighting with his bare hands. However, when he pulled Simon from the remains of his mech, Simon stabbed him in the chest with his Core Drill, focusing an immense amount of spiral power into him, tearing a massive hole in his chest. With his last words, he told Simon that "when a million monkeys cover this world, the moon becomes the messenger of hell and destroys the Spiral Planet." Witht his, he fell to his death.
At the moment of his demise, Genome was pulled into Memento Eden.
Over the course of his rule, Lord Genome created a number of princesses, to serve as vessels of Spiral Power until he got bored of them and discarded them. One such discarded princess was Nia, who was with Simon in the final battle.
Personality:
Genome carries himself with dignity and presence, speaking softly but being difficult to ignore. His greatest virtue is his desire to protect the world around him; his greatest flaw is his fear of those he desires to protect. This is what led to his enslavement of mankind - he crushed them in order to save them.
If faced with a problem, Genome will react to it very rationally and, at times, very coldly - this is somewhat of a "dark side" of Genome's personality. He can percieve those weaker than himself as fundamentally inferior beings, beneath his major concern. These two sides to his personality - his drive to protect mankind, and his contempt for the weak - are frequently at odds with one another, although the former voice weakened considerably over his millenium of tyranny. If he deems it necessary, he has no qualms against attempting to manipulate those around him to further his ambitions (although these ambitions are frequently ultimately in the interest of the greater good).
Genome is highly intelligent, and highly cunning. When he speaks, there is frequently a veiled hint of malice behind his words. At times, he can be very direct; at other times he can be very subtle. His words are always carefully chosen, both for meaning and for impression.
